In theory, the higher a screen’s resolution – i.e., the more pixels it has – the sharper and more detailed its pictures will look. Generally pictures from an HD service contain 1920×1080 pixels. The nearer a screen’s resolution can get to matching that pixel count, the better those HD pictures have the potential to look.
It is reasonable, then, to put native pixel resolution quite high on your list of TV priorities. But take into account that resolution alone will not guarantee an excellent high definition picture. A TV also needs to have many other talents, particularly image processing – before a high resolution panel will necessarily produce an excellent high definition picture.
Consider, too, that high resolution screens with poor image processing will likely make a mess of showing standard 570-line PAL footage.
