Now that high definition is well and truly here, picture sharpness has become more important than ever. But how detailed a picture looks is not just a factor of how many pixels a screen has.

An HD ready TV consists of at least 720 lines of pixels, however, many other factors play a part in picture detailing.

As plasma screens are generally able to reproduce a more lifelike range of colours, they can provide a much more nuanced and realistic image, better suited for viewing in the ambient lighting at home

LCD screens may appear more detailed in shop environments due to the sheer brightness and sharpness of their pictures. But the reality is that such extreme brightness and sharpness levels can actually look harsh and unrealistic in a domestic environment. While it’s important for a TV’s picture to be highly detailed, it should always look natural.
